Shena Mackay (1944 ….)

Slaves to the Mushroom

A slightly depressing account of Sylvia’s day at the mushroom farm, where she picks and grades mushrooms in a dark, damp shed.  As an account it’s believable, and as a short story it is interesting.  I came away feeling as if I’d been in an exhibition of black and white photographs  where the theme was agricultural workers in their own environment.

Mackay’s portrait of Sylvia is what is interesting, that and the mushrooms of course.

Slaves to the Mushrooms was another choice from The Penguin Book of Modern Women’s Short Stories, edited by Susan Hill (1990) or available to read online here
